Psalm 11

God Believes in You

1 In the LORD I take refuge.
How then can you say to me:
"Flee like a bird to your mountain.

2 For look, the wicked bend their bows;
they set their arrows against the strings
to shoot from the shadows
at the upright in heart.

3 When the foundations are being destroyed,
what can the righteous do?"

4 The LORD is in his holy temple;
the LORD is on his heavenly throne.
He observes the sons of men;
his eyes examine them.

5 The LORD examines the righteous,
but the wicked and those who love violence
his soul hates.

6 On the wicked he will rain
fiery coals and burning sulfur;
a scorching wind will be their lot.

7 For the LORD is righteous,
he loves justice;
upright men will see his face.

Psalm 70

God Believes in You

1 Hasten, O God, to save me;
O Lord, come quickly to help me.

2 May those who seek my life
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.

3 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"
turn back because of their shame.

4 But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation always say,
"Let God be exalted!"

5 Yet I am poor and needy;
come quickly to me, O God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay.

John 21:15–19

Church You Can Believe In

15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?"
"Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."
Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

16Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?"
He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."

17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. 18 I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." 19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!"

No Greater Love

I just recently came across this audio slide show on The Washington Post's website that left me with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. The Post's simple introduction tells you all you need to know:

Classie Morant, 104, swore that as long as she had strength, she would care for her bedridden sister, Rozzie Laney, 92. For more than 20 years, she has kept that promise.
(Don't worry if the slideshow takes a minute or two to download -- it's worth it.)

John 21:1–14

Church You Can Believe In

1Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: 2Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
4Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?"
"No," they answered.

6He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. 9When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

10Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught."

11Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. 13Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Gambella recovery update

Earlier this month we posted a story about BUMC's partnership with Global Hope Network International in support of development and recovery efforts in the village of Gambella, Kenya, which was ransacked and some residents killed in a raid by thieves. We continue to receive updates from Jeff Power, US Mobilization Director, who sent along the following inspiring account by Habiba Mengesha, one of GHNI's Kenyan staff members.

In Gambella many people have very little hope to live for and some have nothing to opt for especially now, when the few goat which kept them their out in bush was all stolen in broad day light.

But after all this turmoil, four women came to us and said, "Even if all seems to be dark ahead of us, thanks to Global Hope Network International projects we can still work hard and get back our life to normal if all is going to be well in Gambella." So there is hope for future.

They are the poorest of all poor. They never imagine at any time things might change in their life, they never thought they will see white man in their village or any form of help could come their way.

But now, to tell the truth, even the young and unborn child in Gambella have hope, a brighter future because of the work Global Hope are doing in terms of food, water, wellness, education, enterprise and above all their whole being as human.

Gambella village is growing to small town at an amazing rate, apart from the attack which brought everything to stand still in a day.

But Gambella people still feel they have friends who care, even if all is not okay. They feel there are some people from somewhere (the muzungu, the foreigners) who are concern and loving them and give great hope of facing all the challenge and trials which comes their way.

Jeff then went on to say, "Wow. It's such an honor. Together we can help one poor village at a time, like Gambella, find Hope."

You can hear Habiba describe the impact of GHNI's Transformational Community Development on Gambella in this video clip.

BUMC continues to be blessed to participate in spreading Christ's love and hope in such a tangible way!

John 20:19–31

Church You Can Believe In

19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

24Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!"
But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."
26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

30Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John 17:13–26

Church You Can Believe In

13"I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

20"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

25"Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."

John 15:1–8

Church You Can Believe In

1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."

John 14:5–14

Church You Can Believe In

5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
6Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

8Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."

John 10:11–18

Church You Can Believe In

11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

John 9:1–41

Recovery You Can Believe In

1As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. 4As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

6Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. 7"Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

8His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?" 9Some claimed that he was.
Others said, "No, he only looks like him."
But he himself insisted, "I am the man."

10"How then were your eyes opened?" they demanded.

11He replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see."

12"Where is this man?" they asked him.
"I don't know," he said.

13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath. 15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. "He put mud on my eyes," the man replied, "and I washed, and now I see."
16Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath."
But others asked, "How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?" So they were divided.

17Finally they turned again to the blind man, "What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened."
The man replied, "He is a prophet."

18The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents. 19"Is this your son?" they asked. "Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?"

20"We know he is our son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind. 21But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself." 22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. 23That was why his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."

24A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. "Give glory to God," they said. "We know this man is a sinner."

25He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!"

26Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

27He answered, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"

28Then they hurled insults at him and said, "You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples of Moses! 29We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don't even know where he comes from."

30The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. 32Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."

34To this they replied, "You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw him out.

35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
36"Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him."

37Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."

38Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.

39Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind."

40Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?"

41Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

John 8:31–38

Recovery You Can Believe In

31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"

34Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father."

New & Improved BUMC Bookstore

Broomfield UMC's Vision Statement declares that we aim to "encourage and equip people to follow Jesus Christ as His disciples." One way we're doing that is through the creation of an online bookstore hosted by Amazon.com. Actually, we should probably rename it the BUMC Library -- our goal is not to sell you products but rather to share with you some of the books, CDs, and DVDs that we have found inspiring and thought-provoking on our own faith journeys. We've just updated the site with more recommendations from staff members, as well as individual pages from Charlotte, Mitchell, & Pete. Think of it as if you were perusing the bookshelf in somebody's office here at the church looking for inspiration through new books or music. Click on the Amazon Bookstore icon on the right side of this webpage and start browsing, and let us know what you think!

Colossians 1:1–12

Recovery You Can Believe In

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2To the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father.

3We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints — 5the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel 6that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth. 7You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, 8and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.
9For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

Nothing beats Iowa in the summer

Pete Smith, our Director of Youth Ministries, wrote the following post to give the BUMC community a window into the summer trip he and a group of youth went on during the last week of July.

***********************************************

To me nothing beats Iowa in the summer. The corn is higher than an elephant’s eye and as green as it can be. And you absolutely can’t beat Iowa sunsets and fireflies (aka lightening bugs). Another thing that lies near to my heart about summer in Iowa is Riverside Bible Camp. For 3+ years I have tried to relay this love to the youth here at BUMC and finally it worked! A group of 14 youth went to High School week at Riverside Bible Camp in Story City, IA!

We left on a Saturday and visited Ames, IA (my old stomping ground) and then camp took over on Sunday. For the entire week the youth were able to praise God, learn and discuss about God and do other fun and exciting activities. To me the best part of the week was the Sunday after we returned. God was truly moving in the lives of most of these youth and it was evident to both myself and their parents. This week of camp got discussions going between parents and kids. This week of camp broke down some walls that these youth so defiantly built. God was moving at Riverside, but He was also moving in the ride across Nebraska and in the houses of the youth here in Colorado.

Praise God for a great week, safe travels and renewed hearts! He is faithful and mighty in how He works, which was so evident to me after a wonderful week of camp. Thank you for all of your support and prayers as well. It was fun to be away and in a supportive community like Riverside, but it is also good to know that we were coming back to another supportive community here at BUMC.

James 2:14–21, 26

Recovery You Can Believe In

14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

20You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?

26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

"Journey Home," the Summer Musical – a Thank You from Charlotte

Charlotte Sass wrote the following letter of thanks to the folks who were involved in the children's summer musical production of "Journey Home," which was performed August 9 in the Family Life Center. We want to share it with the entire BUMC community as a testament to how God continues to move in people's lives, no matter their stage of life!

***********************************************

Dear all:

I don’t really know where to begin with my words of love and gratitude to all of you – as parents, as children, as volunteers… as COMMUNITY! I have had many folks write to me or talk to me to tell me that this evening, this children’s production, this special experience… touched them or healed them in deeply personal ways. Most of these people did not have children in the show, which just goes to speak to the ministry God has these children doing. I personally understand what these folks are talking about, because I am one of them.

Most of you know that I lost my husband a little over a year ago, and I lost my heart for a long while to total brokenness. I acutely understand that brokenness, in this world, is very real and always present. But, I am also witness to the extraordinary reality that God’s love, the love of community, and the pure joy of children – heals. I have not laughed like I have with these children over the past week for a VERY long time… in fact, I am still laughing at new stories from backstage, or from remembering something priceless that happened on stage – and my stomach hurts from it! What an extraordinary GIFT! I also continue to be touched by the incredible ways these children modeled what it is to be a community of support, encouragement, and humility with each other.

Someone wrote me and eloquently iterated that the minor “hiccups” during the show didn’t at all detract from the message, that in fact, they enhanced God’s message. He said, “though all is not perfect, the spirit and His love are constant and nothing will lessen it.” I felt the same way (which is rare for me – I tend to be one of those worldly perfectionists, but God really spoke to me in the mistakes!) as I watched the kids show me pure joy in their candid unscripted moments. Of course, there were also moments of artistic beauty as well… These kids are capable of so much!

So, THANK YOU. Thank you to the parents first and foremost for the not so small chore of getting your kids to and from rehearsals! Thank you for your patience when we ran over! Thank you for all the other ways each of you supported this ministry, parents and volunteers … there were SO MANY who helped so significantly, the list is huge: choreography, set, lights, spots, sound, band, costumes, make-up, snacks, tickets, programs, gifts, cakes, backstage support, costume changes, concessions, chairs, set up, tear down… the list goes on and on. I am downright honored to be a part of true Christian community – one which is not perfect, but one which is genuine.

Most importantly, I want to thank the kids. They were perfect in their love and joy, inspirational in their hard work and character, and I am grateful and honored to have worked with them.

God’s peace to each and every one of you.

Charlotte

Romans 6:11–14

Recovery You Can Believe In

11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Ephesians 2:1–5

Recovery You Can Believe In

1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Be Still...

Some of you might not know that I work for BUMC…from Indiana! Technology has allowed me to stay in touch with all of you at BUMC and keep my job from over 1,000 miles away – very cool!

I was recently looking through a journal entry written while living in Colorado, and wanted to share some of it with you:
The blessing of having so many incredible people in our lives while in Colorado has been overwhelming at times. To love people and feel loved by so many is truly such a gift! Have we had difficult moments here in CO? Absolutely. God has stretched us, ripped our hearts up and sewn them back together, allowed people to really pierce us where it hurts…but we’ve always felt a peace from Him that ran even deeper than the painful moments…we were and are called to be here now…and that peace is what has sustained us. We joked when making the decision about whether to move out here that, “You can’t say no to God.” Usually a sentence would begin from one of our mouths, “What about….?” And then we would both say, “But you can’t say no to God!” (and this pattern would repeat about every 15 minutes as doubts arose!). Our heads were working overtime, but our hearts knew what we needed to do.
I’ve found that regardless of where I’m at in life, my head has a tendency to work overtime. The funny thing is that I KNOW that if I just take a moment to stop, breathe, and listen to God, I usually find my heart quieted enough to quiet my head as well…yet I often don’t take that moment to do so. Why is it so difficult to just STOP and be still sometimes? How do you best make yourself have those still, quiet moments that God yearns to have with us?

I once told a friend that I felt like I was in a whirlwind, and this wise friend said, “Kendra, whirlwinds can be quite beautiful sometimes, as long as you don’t get caught up in them.” I like that image…and reminder to step back and be still. :)

Romans 6:1–7

Recovery You Can Believe In

1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

Philippians 4:4-7

Sustain Joy: Rejoice Always

4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Sustain Joy: Inexpressible Joy

6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Sustain Joy: Joy Overflowing

1And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. 5And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will.

It's So Easy to Do Nothing

Even though the following article by a BUMC member is also being published in this week's In Step newsletter, we want to feature it on our blog as well. Christians sometimes take relief work for granted, while society often takes Christians working in relief equally for granted. As Larry Beer's article about Global Hope shows, taking things for granted leads to inaction, which is a stance none of us can afford to take.

************************************************
Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me.
Matthew 25:40

It happens to all of us! We all become desensitized to the suffering of others. Whether we see starving children on a TV commercial or see a family on the news devastated by a father’s murder in the local area, we all become “used to” seeing such things.

In modern times with education and media, Christians can no longer live in blissful ignorance of the great suffering that exists in the world. And with organizations like Global Hope right in our church and community, we no longer have a valid excuse not to do something—not when it’s so easy.

Global Hope is an organization with origins here at BUMC. They provide ongoing support for abandoned Romanian children, or Houses of Hope (Christian family-style homes). Randy Jessen, a former pastor here at BUMC, founded the organization in 1996 and together with caring members of the community have established a presence in Romania that has endured for more than 10 years! The Romanian arm of ministry provides long-term care for 22 children by providing stable homes, Romanian parents who care for them, and the gospel of Christ.

Global Hope has also extended its loving arms to Kenya to support children who either have HIV/AIDS or whose parent(s) died of HIV/AIDS. Twenty-five children live in a simple home called Hope for Orphans Rehabilitation Center (The Rescue Center), which has no electricity or running water.

The Rescue Center was founded by Christine Wambui, a woman whose sister died of HIV/AIDS and whose son was subsequently orphaned. Christine decided to care for her nephew and became aware of the multitude of other children in the same condition—many of whom do not have the good fortune of an extended family. What happens to them? Fortunately for the children for whom she cares, there is The Rescue Center. However, healthy and abundant food such as vegetables, fruit and meat are luxuries they cannot afford. Medical care is also limited. There are schools but resources are limited and the cost of high school is prohibitive to most.

While the phenomenon of desensitization and ignoring even the most horrible and unfair of situations is natural to the human condition, by paying attention and allowing ourselves to care, it can become unnatural to the Christian condition. Please consider contributing to Global Hope and to these disadvantaged children. Ninety-five percent of contributions go directly to supporting these children in Romania and Africa without parents and with so little else.

In early November, a team of missionaries from multiple Colorado churches will be traveling to The Rescue Center in Kenya. BUMC participants are Joyce Genord, Joe Lynch, and Larry Beer. The team will be involved in a variety of projects such as constructing a dining area, kitchen, playground set, new beds, and a drainage system.

If you are interested in joining, there are two spots left or there is much you can provide—clothes, toys, school supplies and money for nourishment and even education*. For more information, please visit the Global Hope table after Sunday service or the displays in the hallway next to the chapel. Joyce, Joe and Larry would love to give you more information and even have you as part of the mission team!

Sustain Joy: Joy Knows No Bounds

2Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. 3I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you. 4I have great confidence in you; I take great pride in you. Sustain Joy: God Inhabits Praises

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from the words of my groaning?

2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, and am not silent.

3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the praise of Israel.

4 In you our fathers put their trust;

5 They cried to you and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not disappointed.

James 1:17-2:9

Encourage One Another: James' practical advice

17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

19My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

James 2

1My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
5Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?

8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.

Philippians 1:1-11

Encourage One Another: A model of encouragement

1Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:

2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3I thank my God every time I remember you. 4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me. 8God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

a simple word of gratitude, part 2...

Charlotte's post regarding how we at BUMC take God's commandment to love seriously continues to generate reflection and discussion (click here for another reaction to her original post). Frank recently commented on Charlotte's thoughts, which we are cross-posting after the jump to keep the conversation going in people's minds and hearts.

*****************************************
Gratitude of Thanks...

I have never blogged, but the question – Is it our duty of faith to love? - posed by Charlotte on a June 28th blog has tugged at my heart to respond. John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” One of the most repeated verses of Scripture is as deep as it is brief. As an action from God, Jesus came to us to display God’s character and set an everlasting example. In fact, isn’t it the fruits of the spirit that Jesus continually discussed and acted upon? Thereby, presenting us with the tangible understanding of God and his desire for us to be similarly responsive. To me, it somewhat boils down to acting on the fruits of the spirit (generosity, patience, kindness, compassion,..) provides the essence of love. And, thus giving love a life and touching those surrounding us. These actions being repeated with similar actions can do nothing but bring us all into a community of love with comfort and joy. And a sense of being in close alignment with Jesus’ own actions and closer to God.

In my life, the “essence” of love has been a journey to understand while having a continual hope in connecting with another’s spirited action. We are usually led to feel this essence of love is ONLY truly found in a marriage or partnership. I would limit my spirited action to a select few looking for the one to give love and, in response to receive it. At times, as I opened myself to one with love and not have it reciprocated, I would soon put it in a deep holding spot. Never thinking I could have it be present on my own. But, as Jesus showed, love is ever present and alive in each of us when acting with a fruit of the spirit. Simply “acting” on one of the fruits not only brings us into the sense of being but also gives those around us the love God has meant for all to share. So, my response to the question is ‘YES’ – that not only as a thirty something, but also as a twenty something, forty something and older, our duty is to convey and act on the fruits that God gifted to us and bring the essence of love to those around and strengthen the community into a Christ like being. I can only strive to let my heart and spirit work to what Jesus so effortlessly was able to do in bringing the deep meaning of love to all.

Ephesians 4:17-32

Encourage One Another: The new self
in Christ

17So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.

20You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

25Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26"In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold. 28He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave
you.

Romans 12:1-21

Encourage One Another: True Christian fellowship

1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

9Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. 20On the contrary:
"If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Help & Recovery in Gambella, Kenya

For the past year, BUMC has partnered with Global Hope Network International (GHNI) to assist with development efforts in the Kenyan village of Gambella. Just this summer, our Vacation Bible School Safari kids sold crafts to raise funds for water filtration units for the village, and the July 12 services featured a live video feed from Gambella to show the BUMC family how our support is helping our brothers and sisters in Africa. Click here to see a YouTube video that shows the Gambellan women singing songs of thanks for the reception of a demonstration acre that will help them learn life-saving agricultural techniques.

Jeff Power of GHNI recently reported the sad news that Gambella was attacked by a band of thieves who came in the light of day and shot and killed six Gambellans. When the rest of the village fled, the thieves stole animals, money, and household items from almost 200 families. Below is a note from Jeff with an update on recovery efforts in the village.

Hello everyone, I’m now writing from our Asian staff conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Thank you so much for the outpouring of support to help Gambella, Kenya in its recovery. Wubshet & Habiba [GHNI staff members] have returned to Kenya from our African staff conference and will continue working with Gambella's leaders to get the best immediate help to the most critical families.

One woman whose husband was killed in the attack was out working in our community farm plot three days later, removing rocks and pulling weeds. She said, "I lost my husband and I lost my animals. This is now my hope." We are committed to giving her renewed hope, in every way we can.

And the village has redoubled its efforts in development, determined to not let this stop them.

I'm amazed.

I'll have more info for you when I get another update from Wubshet & Habiba.

Thank you, again, for your tremendous care.

The people of Gambella are humbled by all this help from around the world.

--Jeff

P.S. We are giving great training to our Asian staff in our new model of TCD (Transformational Community Development). More on that later. Staff are here from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and China. We've shown them a 10-minute video of Habiba telling the motivating story of how much Gambella has grown and tramsformed in the last 1.5 years.

16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

22Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?"

23Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25"All this I have spoken while still with you. 26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
