John 3:13-15

13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

July 2011 BUMC Newsletter

Hello, Friends!

You will find this issue of our newsletter looking a bit different than what you’re used to. We are switching to a monthly format to save trees and also to streamline our communications. We found that the content of our newsletter was becoming quite redundant to our other communications like our emailed weekly updates and the bulletin. Our plan is for the newsletter to be filled with articles of importance to our church and community, not just another listing of announcements.

The design has been updated to reflect consistency across our communications. It is still a work in progress, but we hope you like the new direction we are heading. We also invite you to join us on Twitter and Facebook if you haven’t already. @BroomfieldUMC, @PastorKenBrown and @PastorThomasC need some new followers!

Have a blessed week!

John 3:10-12

10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

John 3:6-9

6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[a] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[b] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

Free Self Esteem Workshops for 4th-6th Grade Girls in July

All girls going into the 4th, 5th and 6th grade this fall are invited to a series of self esteem workshops at Broomfield United Methodist Church (545 W. 10th Ave.) on July 26, 28 & 29 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The workshops will be led by Gracie Forrey, a 15-year-old junior at Broomfield High School, who is pursuing the Girl Scout Gold Award. This award is the highest and most prestigious award that can be given to a girl scout. Only 5-6% of girl scouts receive the Gold Award. It illustrates accomplishments in the areas of leadership, career planning, personal development and community service. The project to receive the award cannot be a simple service project like gathering food for a local food bank or picking up trash along a street - it must be sustaining. Before starting the project, a Girl Scout must develop a plan, investigate the topic, gather a team and present her idea to the Girl Scout Council. Once that is done, she can begin the project.

Forrey believes that girls are being pressured by society to be something they are not. Girls are being sent messages that they are not good enough and need to change. Her project, called There Could Never Be a More Beautiful You: A Girl’s Guide to Self Esteem, Friendships and Real Beauty, is designed to counteract that message. The workshops she’s giving will span three sessions, each with a different topic. They will focus on positive self esteem, inner beauty and friendships. The group will discuss ways to raise self esteem through fun activities, demonstrate how what matters is what is on the inside, not the outside, and how to deal with girls who are not as nice as they should be. There is no required fee for them workshops, but there will be a free-will offering to cover supplies. A light dinner will be served. Please contact Gracie Forrey at forrl3@hotmail.com if you have questions or if you are planning to attend (to ensure adequate seating and supplies).

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Daily Scripture June 11, 2011

John 1:35-42

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

John Testifies About Jesus
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

26 “I baptize with[a] water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

And here is the rest of it.

Daily Scripture June 8, 2011

John 1:19-23

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah
19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

Daily Scripture June 7, 2011

John 1:14-18

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

Daily Scripture June 6, 2011

John 1:6-13

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Daily Scripture June 3, 2011

1 Corinthians 13:1-8a

1 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

And here is the rest of it.

10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.

Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
