2 Timothy 2:11-16

God Is with Us: Practicing Christ's Presence

11Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
12if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
13if we are faithless,
he will remain faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.

14Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.

1 Thessalonians 1:1-8

God Is with Us: Practicing Christ's Presence

1Paul, Silas and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace and peace to you.

2We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. 3We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

4For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. 6You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 7And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it.

Gimp, Grimace, and Grace

‘Twas the night before Christmas 2009, which I will not soon forget. On Monday, December 21, I experienced a herniated disc or two in the course of doing a rather typical trunk twist. With Game Day (aka Christmas Eve services) approaching, like any world class athlete (which I am not) I contacted a trainer who specializes in chronic lower back pain. Over four consecutive days, my trainer conditioned me for Christmas Eve. On Day One with the trainer I learned that he does not have the spiritual gift of mercy! Nevertheless, his pain relief was amazing.

On Christmas Eve I experienced one of the most precious gifts I’ve ever received in twenty years of ministry. While I did my best to conceal my pain, gimp, and grimaces, etc, from 2:25 pm on, it was cause for concern and prayer for many of you. I so desired not to be a distraction from God’s unique message of love reserved for that evening. And you came to my personal rescue!

A prayer trio laid healing hands on me at 3:00 in my office to kick-off Christmas Eve afternoon; at 3:55 in the wings of the FLC stage, the band (completely unsolicited) circled me and prayed for my stamina; at 6:05 during our congregational singing of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” in service, someone came to me as I remained seated and prayed; at 7:10 someone blessed me with God’s beverage of choice—a venti Christmas blend Starbucks coffee; just before the 8:00 service, a family delivered to me a steak dinner with all the fixings; then the chapel prayer team prayed for me in person and served me communion shortly thereafter; after the 8:00 service another person laid healing hands on my back; and the 9:15 service rallied me for the finale—an 11:00 pm service that was more spirited than I’ve ever led in my seven years at BUMC. I suspect the “prayer blanket” crafted by you for me that evening covered that service as well.

I share this to say thank you for being generous in your prayers for me. Your acts of kindness blessed hundreds this Christmas; your financial gifts through our Wider Missions offering—which continue to pour in these last days of 2009—permit us as Methodists to be the only state-approved Protestant presence in Russia and to continue loving those devastated by Hurricane Katrina as other denominations have moved on to other missions. Thank you for being a caring congregation throughout the year. Personally, your prayers sustained me Christmas Eve as God glorified his name yet again; as God still proclaims, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

God bless you and may you enjoy this blessed Christmas season.

2 Corinthians 2:5-11

God Is with Us: Practicing Christ's Presence

5If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent—not to put it too severely. 6The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him. 7Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. 9The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. 10If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

God Is with Us: Practicing Christ's Presence

19Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.

John 14:23-29

God Is with Us: Practicing Christ's Presence

23Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25"All this I have spoken while still with you. 26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

28"You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe."

Matthew 1:18-25

God Is with Us: Love

18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"—which means, "God with us."

24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

John 1:1-14

God Is with Us: Love

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.

3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Is There a Place?

As I confessed in an earlier post, I am a bit of a choral geek and have been since elementary school. When I was in junior high I joined the youth choir at a local church that some of our neighbors attended. Even though this church was a different denomination than the church my family belonged to, its music ministry was stellar, the highpoint of which was the annual Living Christmas Tree show featuring the high school and adult choirs with a professional orchestra. The first act featured all the fun, secular, winter festival-type songs, with choreography and a little storyline as well. The second act opened with a reading of the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke and focused on sacred Christmas repertoire, with the choir ensconsed in the 'living Christmas tree,' a large steel structure in the shape of a pine tree hung with garlands in which the singers' heads take the place of ornaments.

The music director was Steve Amerson, a young conductor who also had a gorgeous tenor voice. The highpoint of the show for many was when Steve would turn to face the audience and sing a solo late in the second half. One of the years I sang in the show (waaaaaay back in the 80s), his solo was a new song called "Is There a Place?" I remembered the song when putting together my own Christmas music playlist earlier this month; to be honest, I'm a little surprised the song isn't better known. The only online source I could find of the entire song is this YouTube video, which is the audio track accompanied by a slideshow of Christmas photos. But I thought it was worth sharing, not only for Steve's performance but for the question it poses on Christmas Eve -- Is there a place that you can offer where this new life can begin?

Luke 2:4-14

God Is with Us: Love

4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

God Is with Us: Love

9"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17This is my command: Love each other."

The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. 33"My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

John 3:16-21

God Is with Us: Love

16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

God Is with Us: Joy

7Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. 8For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs 9so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy, as it is written:
"Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
I will sing hymns to your name." 10Again, it says,
"Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people." 11And again,
"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and sing praises to him, all you peoples." 12And again, Isaiah says,
"The Root of Jesse will spring up,
one who will arise to rule over the nations;
the Gentiles will hope in him."

13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

John 16:19-24

God Is with Us: Joy

19Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? 20I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."

Practice the Presence of Christ

“Connectivity” is a word we hear commonly these days, often in reference to those technologies that help us communicate with each other more conveniently. However, I have discovered new dimensions to this familiar concept. In 2008, I attended the Group Life Conference on small groups at Willow Creek Church near Chicago. Of all the speakers I heard, the first one, John Burke, left the deepest impression on me. John is a pastor in San Antonio.

His congregation tried an intriguing experiment. The church supplied an inexpensive watch alarm to each participant. The watches would go off once an hour to remind the wearers to stay connected to Christ. The purposes were to cultivate an awareness of Christ’s presence, to be aware of His guidance, and to depend upon Him for strength. By the end of 40 days, people underwent radical changes in their thoughts, habits, and lifestyles. They did so not because their pastor persuaded them, but because they encountered the Living Christ and could never be the same. One man who wore a watch alarm started out as an agnostic and ended up a believer.

Advent is a season of spiritual preparation and remembrance. During this Advent season, I encourage you to remember that Jesus is also present with you – and his Spirit lives inside you. This is the significance of the name given to Yeshua by the prophets: “Emmanuel.” Emmanuel means “God with us,” and it is true. God is with us through the Spirit. Oftentimes in Advent, we speak of waiting for the Lord. But this year, I encourage you to wait upon the Lord, to practice the presence of the Living Christ. Because He’s alive within you, you can be transformed. Get connected and let God do the rest! No technology required!

Merry Christmas!

John 14:1-11

God Is with Us: Joy

1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going."

5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

6Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

8Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves."

Luke 1:5-14

God Is with Us: Joy

5In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. 7But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years.

8Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.

11Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. 14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth..."

Psalm 40

God Is with Us: Joy

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.

2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.

3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the LORD.

4 Blessed is the man
who makes the LORD his trust,
who does not look to the proud,
to those who turn aside to false gods.

5 Many, O LORD my God,
are the wonders you have done.
The things you planned for us
no one can recount to you;
were I to speak and tell of them,
they would be too many to declare.

6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but my ears you have pierced;
burnt offerings and sin offerings
you did not require.

7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come—
it is written about me in the scroll.

8 I desire to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart."

9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
I do not seal my lips,
as you know, O LORD.

10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I speak of your faithfulness and salvation.
I do not conceal your love and your truth
from the great assembly.

11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD;
may your love and your truth always protect me.

12 For troubles without number surround me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails within me.

13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me;
O LORD, come quickly to help me.

14 May all who seek to take my life
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.

15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"
be appalled at their own shame.

16 But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation always say,
"The LORD be exalted!"

17 Yet I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
O my God, do not delay.

Malachi 3:1-5

God Is with Us: Peace

1 "See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty.

2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4 and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.

5 "So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty.

8Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10For,
"Whoever would love life
and see good days
must keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from deceitful speech.
11He must turn from evil and do good;
he must seek peace and pursue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."

Hebrews 12:1-14

God Is with Us: Peace

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

4In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."

7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13"Make level paths for your feet," so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

14Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

Recently, the Hope for Orphans Rescue Center in Nairobi was broken into and two of the girls were raped and the house mother was severely beaten. The children were terrorized, and thus it has become necessary to direct attention to increased security and professional counseling for the children. The mission team's goal is to raise $3,600 tonight to cover these costs. Enjoy a Made-to-Order Omelette Station courtesy of Omni Interlocken Resorts, see pictures from the mission trip, and make a tangible difference in the lives of these children!

There is only one newsletter in December, so I wish you a Spirit-filled, joyous Christmas with your loved ones. May God truly be present in your hearts and minds this Season.

Warmest Blessings!
Kendra :)

I Have So Much to Be Happy About

With Thanksgiving just past, I want to share a thoughtful poem with you. This poem was written by Alice Marsh Yelken, the wife of Rev. Gene Yelken, who is now retired from serving numerous churches around the Rocky Mountain Conference. Alice has now joined the eternal Communion of Saints. She has been gone several years now, but she would have enjoyed blogging. At the end of her life, she developed a significant email outreach, and I always looked forward to reading her messages. The depth of her reflections and insights always brought encouragement to me. She was a mature spirit who knew the meaning of love and joy.

This poem is entitled “I Have So Much to Be Happy About,” and it is provides a great sense of perspective. Alice wrote the poem for Thanksgiving 2002, but I think it provides an appropriate message for Advent as well. We just celebrated the Sunday devoted to peace, and Alice has helped me understand that gratitude is the foundation of peace, the foundation of justice. I hope you find her poem to be as meaningful as I do. May God bless you with much to be happy about during this festive season – and may our gratitude provide rich seeds for the growth of peace and justice in our time!

I Have So Much to Be Happy About

“I have so much to happy about today”
She said as she danced off to school
Ah, but the world is her oyster, you say--
She has it all, why, she’s nobody’s fool.

Yes, she is one of the privileged few
Contented, safe, warm and well fed
Two loving parents and a big brother, too--
Nothing at all for her to dread.

Eight years old, a bright future ahead
The best in all things and opportunities galore--
Why should she have any other thought in her head?
Why, she has the world by the tail and more!

Yes, she is one of the privileged few
And, among that few, one of the fewer still
Who knows without a doubt that it’s true
With gratitude deep in her heart instilled.

Methinks this a message we all need to hear
At Thanksgiving time, two thousand and two
That we should have naught in our hearts but good cheer--
In God’s world, we’re among the privileged few.

World peace, justice and plenty for all
Begin with just one with a grateful heart--
One willing to share, as we answer God’s call
For a world where greed and lust have no part.

Overwhelmed we may be by war and by want
And thinking there’s little one person can do,
While for more things we greedily pant

A grateful heart is one willing to share
No matter their lot or circumstance--
An unselfish heart which loves and cares
While justice for all is not left to chance.

On Thanksgiving day, let’s begin a lifetime of days
Imbued with the gift of a grateful heart
And to God above, let us always give praise
That we have so much to be happy about!

2 Corinthians 13:1-12

God Is with Us: Peace

1This will be my third visit to you. "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses." 2I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others, 3since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. 4For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God's power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God's power we will live with him to serve you.

5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? 6And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. 7Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong. Not that people will see that we have stood the test but that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. 8For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. 9We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is for your perfection. 10This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.

11Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

12Greet one another with a holy kiss.

Ephesians 2:1-14

God Is with Us: Peace

1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

11Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men)— 12remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.

14For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility...

John 14:23-27

God Is with Us: Peace

23Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25"All this I have spoken while still with you. 26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

Luke 2:1-14

God Is with Us: Peace

1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register.

It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas...

Every year my husband looks forward to the beginning of KOSI 101's non-stop Christmas music programming -- for him, it's one sign that Christmas is on its way. I enjoy it, too, but sometimes find KOSI's repertoire a little limited. As a choral geek, I've gotten to sing a range of Christmas music that you'll never hear on popular radio. And not just any old Christmas music, but drop-dead gorgeous music.

So with that in mind, I'd like to share one of my favorites, "Lo, how a rose e'er blooming," here sung in the original German as "Es ist ein Ros' Entsprungen."

Colossians 1:1-12

God Is with Us: Hope

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

2 To the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father.

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints— 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel 6 that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth. 7 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

Philippians 2:1-13

God Is with Us: Hope

1If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

12Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

Romans 5:1-11

God Is with Us: Hope

1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

HOREC update -- Sad News

It seems as if sad news is that much more tragic and touches us more deeply when we hear of it while we are celebrating. And we're not talking about Tiger's fender bender or lower-than-desired Black Friday receipts. It is an understatement to describe the latest update from the Global Hope Kenyan mission team as "sad" -- it would be heartbreaking at any time of year, but is particularly so in this season of thanks-giving as we commence the journey to Christmas.

Briefly, early on what was our Thanksgiving Day, a group of about 15 thugs broke into the Hope for Orphans Rescue Center in Nairobi. They ransacked the building, stole supplies, terrorized the children, savagely beat the housemother, and raped two young girls.

The extended network of missionaries who work with HOREC are already mobilizing to provide immediate improved security and counseling for the children. You can read more about the attack and recovery efforts by clicking on the link above. But please keep the children and the adults who work to provide them a brighter future in your prayers this Advent, that Christ's hope, peace, joy, and love will reach them despite the evil that has been inflicted upon them. And please consider coming to the Wonderful Wednesday meal at 5:45 p.m. on December 9, which was already on the calendar to recognize and benefit the BUMC Global Hope Kenya Post-Mission Trip.

Psalm 71:7-16

God Is with Us: Hope

7 I have become like a portent to many,
but you are my strong refuge.

8 My mouth is filled with your praise,
declaring your splendor all day long.

9 Do not cast me away when I am old;
do not forsake me when my strength is gone.

10 For my enemies speak against me;
those who wait to kill me conspire together.

11 They say, "God has forsaken him;
pursue him and seize him,
for no one will rescue him."

12 Be not far from me, O God;
come quickly, O my God, to help me.

13 May my accusers perish in shame;
may those who want to harm me
be covered with scorn and disgrace.

14 But as for me, I will always have hope;
I will praise you more and more.

15 My mouth will tell of your righteousness,
of your salvation all day long,
though I know not its measure.

16 I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, O Sovereign LORD;
I will proclaim your righteousness, yours alone.
