1 Timothy 4:12-14

12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

Daily Scripture September 28, 2011

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Daily Scripture September 27, 2011

2 Corinthians 4:13-15

13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

Daily Scripture September 26, 2011

2 Corinthians 4:10-12

10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

2 Corinthians 4:7-9

7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

Daily Scripture September 19, 2011

John 15:12-17

12 This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than to give up one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I don’t call you servants any longer, because servants don’t know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because everything I heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you could go and produce fruit and so that your fruit could last. As a result, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. 17 I give you these commandments so that you can love each other.

Hebrews 10:22-25

22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Opportunities in Contemporary Worship & Arts

by Jodi Ashley

A long time ago—when I was six months old—I was baptized in the Sanctuary (now the Fellowship Hall). When I was three years old, I toddled my way through the weddings of my oldest sister and oldest brother. The Vietnam War was well underway and both my brother and brother-in-law were being deployed. Shortly after, my family moved to Evergreen. In my late twenties I returned to BUMC and my two-year-old son Nicholas and six-month-old daughter Alessandra were baptized in the Sanctuary (now the Chapel). I joined the choir and quickly became part of the Contemporary Music Ministry where I have served for the past fifteen years. Last year, as many of you know, I married my best friend, Mitchell, in what is now the Sanctuary! Throughout my life there has always been one constant—BUMC. It is the place I call home, and it is a vibrant, growing place to worship and praise God.

BUMC is filled with people who have a heart for serving God. In John 13:14-15, Jesus said, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example: you should do just as I have done for you.” In the spirit of John 13, on Sunday morning, Sept. 11 we are hosting a Servant’s Fair for the Contemporary Worship & Arts Ministry in the Lobby where you can learn about opportunities to serve.

If you have computer skills, enjoy photography, use a video camera or posses a strong creative streak, you might be interested in serving as a camera operator, or creating and displaying the media projected during worship services, including filming and producing videos for BUMC. Those with strong technical proficiency and organizational skills might be interested in serving in our technical director role. If you have the basic skills needed and a heart to serve, the ministry team will provide all the training you need.

We are always in need of talented vocalists and musicians who have experience in a small team setting. We need vocalists who love to sing God’s praises in a contemporary style, have a strong ear for vocal parts and a passion for blending with other vocalists. Instrumental opportunities include guitar, bass, drums, piano, violin, cello, mandolin, brass instruments, etc. Participants must be 18 or older. Auditions are part of the process for participating as a vocalist or instrumentalist.

In addition to worship, the team also has a small group (Jesus Uncorked) that meets weekly, the 3 J’s ministry (Jesus, Jammin’ & Java) that meets monthly to relax, eat and play music together, and we hold additional yearly gatherings so we can fellowship together. We look forward to seeing you on Sept. 11!

Reflection on Financial Peace University

The Financial Peace class will be well worth your while. This class was life changing for our family’s financial situation. Upon your completion of this series you will have gained peace with your finances and knowledge to move forward and change your financial habits. This class opened the door to financial communication within our marriage and a common understanding of our financial goals for our family. People within all walks of life have something to gain and learn from this class, whether it is a young adult who faces college debt or perhaps the newly retired individual. I would compare it to being as important as an individual wearing armor into battle or arming oneself with the spiritual word of God. It is equally important to arm yourself with tools, resources and understanding of the financial realm for the times we live in. Our family was fortunate enough to embark upon this journey of financial peace, which as you learn from the class is not a sprint but a marathon of life. With the completion of the class, I am happy to say we are debt free and have begun building our emergency fund with monthly savings! We could not have made these changes any other way. Try to imagine learning about budgeting, credit or debt in a fun manner. This is exactly the experience you will have! I feel prepared now to raise a family and have the security knowing our finances are under control. If you continue to look the other way, you might look back with regret upon not having gained the knowledge to deal with your finances. Thank you, Financial Peace University, for allowing me to sleep at night knowing that our finances are no longer controlling us, but that we have taken the reins. -Anonymous Writer

BUMC Green Team Events in September!

September is a busy month with Broomfield Days and National Public Lands Day. The BUMC Green Team invites you to serve the Broomfield community during these awesome events!

Broomfield Days 2011 on September 17 will again strive to be a zero-waste event. At Broomfield Days 2009, 83 percent of all waste produced at the festival was diverted from the landfill, meaning all but 17 percent of waste was not recycled or composted. It takes a lot of volunteers to navigate festival-goers in the “green zones” - areas where trash is separated into recycle, compost and landfill bins.

  • More than 120 volunteers are needed to navigate these “green zones.”
  • Volunteers will need to attend a training session on Sept. 8 or 10.
  • Contact Kyle Denny at kyledenny10@gmail.com for more details and to sign up.

Celebrate National Public Lands Day on September 24 from 9am to 2pm by removing noxious weeds and replacing them with trees and plants at the Big Dry Creek Open Space on 128th Avenue. This is a team effort between REI and the city of Westminster.

  • Volunteers should bring gloves and a water bottle. Lunch is provided.
  • People of all ages are welcome. Those with young children at least six years old are encouraged to involve them for the tree planting component.
  • Contact Kyle Denny at kyledenny10@gmail.com for more details and to sign up.

The Green Team looks forward to seeing you at one, or both, of these events!

God Bless!

If you have a passion for creation care or ideas to share on saving energy and reducing waste, will you please consider joining the BUMC Green Team? This fall the Green Team will discuss plans for a Bible study focused on creation care and coordinate plans with the Board of Trustees for environmental stewardship. The next meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 6pm in Room 204. Everyone is welcome! Contact Kyle Denny at 303-596-3734 or kdenny01@comcast.net for details.
